Geelong and surrounding regions record increase of 26 active cases

Geelong recorded an increase of five active COVID-19 cases yesterday as the Victorian total increased by 347, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The increase came after seven new cases in Greater Geelong over the weekend, with five on Saturday and two on Sunday.

Greater Geelong had 18 active cases as of midnight on Monday, up on 13 on Sunday, according to the department.

Total cases increased by six, from 84 on Sunday to 90 on Monday.

The Independent has sought clarification as to if the difference increases in total and active cases resulted from one less-recent case recovering.

Meanwhile, Colac Otway Shire cases have more than doubled in a day from 12 to 27, as of midnight on Monday.

The department has so far linked 13 of those cases to an outbreak at Colac’s Australian Lamb Company abattoir.

The Surf Coast and Gold Plains shires have both recorded three new cases each, bringing their active cases to four and eight respectively.

Victoria recorded 374 new cases on Monday with 27 reclassified – largely due to duplication – increasing the state total by 347 to 6289.

Three women aged in their 80s, 90s and 100s have died in hospital, bringing the total deaths from COVID-19 in Victoria to 42.

Victoria currently has 3147 active cases and 1074 cases from unknown transmission.

Of the new cases, 62 are linked to outbreaks and 312 are under investigation.

Currently 174 people are in hospital with COVID-19, including 36 in intensive care, while 3078 people have recovered.

Of the total cases, 5763 are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 382 are from regional Victoria. More than 1,361,200 tests have been processed to date.

State government is scheduled to introduce mandatory mask-wearing laws on Thursday for anyone leaving home in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

Cases currently linked to public housing in North Melbourne, Flemington and Carlton are as follows:

289 cases are residents of various public housing towers in North Melbourne and Flemington.

55 cases are residents of various public housing towers in Carlton.

Cases currently linked to key outbreaks are as follows:

175 cases have been linked to Al-Taqwa College

60 cases have been linked to Somerville Retail Services in Tottenham

13 cases have been linked to Australian Lamb Company in Colac

38 cases have been linked to JBS in Brooklyn

42 cases have been linked to Estia Health in Ardeer

51 cases have been linked to St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner

15 cases have been linked to the Woolworths Distribution Centre in Mulgrave

31 cases have been linked to Glendale Aged Care facility in Werribee

15 cases have been linked to St Vincent’s Hospital

24 cases have been linked to the Royal Melbourne Hospital Royal Park campus

17 cases have been linked to Embracia Aged Care Moonee Valley in Avondale Heights

While the laws will not apply for the rest state, authorities have recommended other Victorians wear masks when leaving home.
