As Hearing Awareness Week approaches, it’s timely to raise the topic of cochlear implants, a potential solution for people who may be struggling with finding a hearing solution when hearing aids don’t meet needs in a truly effective way.

Geelong Cochlear Care Centre, which has patients coming from as far away as Swan Hill and Mount Gambier, is seeing well more than 400 patients, most from the Geelong region.

Caitlin O’Sullivan, supervisor at the centre, says in the two years they’ve been in Geelong, 69 implantable devices have been activated, with more patients awaiting surgery dates.

“We mark our second birthday on February 27, and it’s been very exciting seeing people’s lives changed by cochlear implants in that time,” she said.

“There’s no upper age limit for receiving a cochlear implant and people from age five years can be assessed and supported at the Geelong Cochlear Care Centre.

“Cochlear implants are fully subsided for medicare card holders in Victoria, as long as patients meet the guidelines for the procedure. We carry out all the auditory testing and ensure surgery is a viable choice.”

The centre runs quarterly free information sessions for people to learn about cochlear implants and how they differ from hearing aids. The next is on April 21, with bookings essential.

“All sessions are attended by a local cochlear implant recipient who will share their own hearing journey and talk about their transition from hearing aids to cochlear implants,“ Caitlin says. “These sessions are a great opportunity to meet other people who are also experiencing the same hearing difficulties. You get to ask all your cochlear implant questions over a cuppa in a relaxed and friendly setting.”

Hearing Awareness Week runs from March 1-7, with World Hearing Day on March 3.
