Car with stolen plates crashes

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man after a car they detected with stolen number plates at Corio crashed at Altona North on Sunday.

Officers first sighted the white Holden Commodore with stolen plates on Bacchus Marsh Road, Corio, about 12.30pm.

They attempted to intercept the car but the driver failed to stop and sped off.

Officers did not pursue the car “due to safety reasons”, a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The Commodore collided with a black Volkswagon Golf before allegedly driving erratically along Princes Freeway towards Altona North.

The man driving the Volkswagon Golf was uninjured in the crash, the spokesperson said.

The Commodore then collided with a parked car on Chambers Road, Altona North, before crashing into a tree and a building.

Police arrested an 18-year old man of no fixed address at the scene and he was taken to hospital with injuries.

The man remained in custody on Monday morning and was assisting police with enquiries, the spokesperson said.

Police urged anyone who witnessed the white Holden Commodore driving erratically or with dash cam footage to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
