Local boxers bound for ‘traditional’ glory at Geelong fight night

Geelong’s Clint Alderton will vie for an Asia-Pacific title when he headlines an all-star boxing tournament featuring local fighters in his home town this June.

The eight-bout Quest for Glory bill will pit Alderton against an overseas opponent in a 10-round fight for the World Boxing Foundation title at South Barwon Civic Centre on 9 June.

Each fight on the bill will match Geelong boxers with opponents from interstate or overseas.

The tournament would be “a traditional affair” with contenders gloved up in the ring, special event lighting and an electric Las Vegas atmosphere, said Old Skool Promotions partners Tony Salta and Steve Hull.

“I’m absolutely delighted. I can’t say how excited I am about this,” said Salta, a world-renowned trainer.

“It’s the first time in Geelong boxing history we’ll see all Geelong fighters in one corner versus all comers. We’re bringing in some very tough opponents for a boxing night Geelong won’t ever forget.

“We’re looking forward to giving the boys a home crowd to show off to, and to showing off Geelong’s talent to rest of the country.

“I’ve been involved in boxing here for 40 years and there’s never been anything like it.”

Other locals on the bill include new Victorian cruiserweight champion Kyle ‘Big Bad Wolf’ Webb, catchweight Michael ‘The Smiling Assassin’ Sacco, super welterweight Jack ‘Sugar Cat’ Light, heavyweight Che St John, featherweight Cain ‘Pocket Rocket’ Brunton, super welterweight Brandon Lee Rocco and welterweight Greg Bell.

Promoter Hull promised that Quest for Glory would be “absolutely first rate”.

“This will be a serious entertainment event, not just a boxing tournament.

“And it will feature local fighters who have already had a serious impact on the Australian boxing scene or who are making their presence felt right now.”
