The “outsider art” of disabled artists will feature in an exhibition opening at Geelong’s Gordon Gallery next week, organisers have announced.
St Laurence Community Services said A New Direction – Art Unlimited 2016 would feature a “highly collectable selection” of works with themes ranging from pop culture to current affairs and personal stories.
“A New Direction confirms our commitment to facilitating and celebrating the talents and diversity of artists with a disability,” Art Unlimited curator Elida Luciarte said.
“A key component of our studio is to provide a fully inclusive experience for the artists in all aspects from producing the work to exhibiting and sales and to provide greater opportunities for these gifted artists to find success in mainstream galleries.
“This unique exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to the Gordon Gallery to engage with powerful, intuitive and non-conformist works of art that celebrate each artist’s individual vision and how they communicate with the world through their work.”
St Laurence Community Services said the art show judges were sculptor Jenny Crompton, Geelong Gallery director Jason Smith and Metropolis Gallery’s Robert Abitable, with TV personality Nicky Buckley to MC the opening night next Thursday.
