Lack of self-esteem

With 66 per cent of couples experiencing some sort of sexual dysfunction in their lifetime, one of the most detrimental consequences is the lack of self-esteem that comes with it. This can be challenging for both parties and even destroy marriages.
World Health Organisation (WHO) studies show between eight per cent and 22 per cent of pre- and post-menopausal women are experiencing painful intercourse (dyspareunia). Of those women, only 10 per cent seek medical advice. Often women are too embarrassed to talk about painful sex, or care providers do not include sexual history as a part of medical history due to time constraints, a lack of training in this area or a lack of treatment options in the area of sexuality.
The causes of painful intercourse include surgery, post cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and more commonly, menopause causing vaginal atrophy (vaginal ageing).
