SELF defence – it’s a term that is thrown around a lot, but few people know what it really means.
Those wanting to learn the ins and outs of self-defence should ask Elite Taekwondo Australia’s head instructor, Manni.
From humble beginnings, Manni learnt how to look after himself from a young age.
He took to taekwondo as a means to defend himself and as a way of focusing and creating discipline.
Manni has 42 years of experience in taekwondo and has also worked in security.
“I teach people that self-defence starts with learning to avoid circumstances that can lead you into danger.
“Through the Elite Taekwondo and women’s self-defence classes I run, I explain the real situations you can face on the streets.
“We learn to avoid a confrontation, to recognise and look for signs before putting yourself into danger and we learn what to do in the event of conflict.
“Only by understanding everything that surrounds these situations can one truly increase their confidence and increase their ability for self-defence,” Manni said.
Torquay instructor Alistar Lawson said: “Elite Taekwondo is all about training with a purpose”.
“We train for fitness, strength, agility, self-defence and flexibility.
“The gains you receive from taekwondo are also fantastic life skills that transfer into your everyday life. You build such confidence in yourself and as an instructor, it’s amazing to watch people develop,” he said.
