GEELONG’S bizarre fascination with Elvis Presley has deepened further with a local vying for an international title as the King’s greatest impersonator.
Jack Gatto, a 24-year-old from Leopold, is off to Memphis after winning the right to represent Australia at Elvis Week, with the event including a competition to find the “ultimate tribute artist”.
Jack’s gig follows numerous other Presley-based activities in Geelong over the years, including regular shows by other tribute artists and Geelong Jukebox Rockers’ Elvis Tribute Festival.
What next? An Elvis sighting at the Corio Bay Roadhouse?

WE MIGHT take the lead in impersonating Elvis but our Arnie act certainly needs a little work.
That’s the verdict on the national TV appearance this week of local muscleman Calum Von Moger (pictured).
The Mr Universe winner has earned a deserved reputation for looking a lot like Arnold Schwarzenegger but his attempt to impersonate Arnie’s’s Nordic vocal stylings fell somewhat short.
Calum’s attempt was closer to Sergeant Schultz from Hogan’s Heroes with a Japanese twist.
Calum, Calum, Calum – “get do dah choppah”.
A LOCAL paper must have already decided the Cats can’t make the finals this season.
Its story about defender Jared Rivers opined he would need to play every one of the remaining seven home and away rounds to join the 200-game club.
Rivers, who was injured for last week’s clash against the Western Bulldogs, sits on 193 games and is almost certain he will retire at season’s end.
Playing your 200th game in a final would certainly be memorable, though.
IN MORE football-related levity, Cats coach Chris Scott was peppered with questions for more than 20 minutes at his media conference this week.
But he still managed to extract a couple of laughs from the media pack.
When the question of Patrick Dangerfield and his potential defection to the Cattery was raised, Scott – referencing his failed raid on Port Adelaide’s Tavis Boak – responded: “Do I get involved with opposition players during the season? Not anymore. We’ve all got to learn from our mistakes”.
On Daniel Menzel’s successful return so far from four knee reconstructions: “I’ve got a dream team on my magnet board, off to the left. I’ve done a little bit of work with those magnets but Menzel’s magnet hasn’t moved too far – it’s been in the one spot for four years.”
Blowing a sigh of relief at the end of the marathon, he quipped: “Longest presser ever”.
But the assembled questioners quickly pointed the finger at Geelong media manager Kevin Diggerson: “He told us training was delayed and suggested we keep asking questions to fill the gap!”
