MAYORESS and Geelong Cup ambassador Elissa Friday has been sacked as a Fashions on the Field judge for writing a column in the Geelong Independent.
The Geelong Advertiser’s GT magazine sponsors Fashions on the Field.
Ms Friday confirmed Geelong Racing Club chief executive Daniel Salter had told her she would no longer judge the fashions event because of her association with the Independent.
Ms Friday, a Deakin University journalism student, writes her new Frugal Friday column fortnightly.
“I’m proud to have been given the opportunity to be an ambassador for the Geelong Cup,” she said.
“Now I have more time to spend with (Mayor) Darryn (Lyons) and the other cup patrons, which is my biggest priority.
“As much as I love fashion, I’m still really looking forward to the cup and mingling with everyone.”
GT editor Kylie Oliver said it was a Geelong Racing Club event and directed questions to Mr Salter.
Mr Salter said Ms Friday already had a busy cup day schedule, performing the national anthem and lunching in the committee room.
“It is an issue now that she is working for the Independent. It is conflicting because Fashions on the Field is sponsored by GT.
“She has been a terrific ambassador and has performed above and beyond our expectations.
“Elissa completely understands and is obviously a little bit disappointed but it frees her up to spend more time as Cup ambassador.”
