Police have identified a driver who assaulted a cyclist on Torquay Road last Sunday, leaving him with facial injuries.
Constable Glen Kelly said the man, aged in his 40s, was spotted on surveillance footage entering the Grovedale Hotel’s drive-through bottle shop. The man was known to hotel staff.
Const Kelly was confident police would arrest the Grovedale resident next week.
“We urge him to come forward before we go to him.
“It’s a very serious offence and it’s something that’s not going to go away – we know who he is.”
Const Kelly said David Rourke, 46, was riding his bike south on Torquay Road near Reserve Road about 10.30am when the motorist cut him off.
Police alleged the cyclist verbally abused the motorist and gave him the finger.
Const Kelly said the driver allegedly pulled over, ran across the road and punched the victim in the face.
Mr Rourke was undergoing surgery when the paper went to press on Wednesday night.
