CHINESE passenger flights could begin operating from Avalon Airport next year, according to Premier Denis Napthine.
He said an agreement between airport owner Linfox and HNA Group Hainan Airlines included a provision for the Chinese firm to begin using Avalon within 18 months.
Linfox and HNA Group signed a memorandum of understanding as part of activities during Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s trade mission to China.
The agreement was revealed the same day the final 54 Qantas engineers finish up at Avalon, concluding 16 years of heavy-maintenance work at the airport.
Dr Naphtine said the agreement also committed Linfox and HNA helping develop an international terminal at Avalon Airport.
“An international terminal at Avalon would mean more jobs for Victorians and greater access to international flights for people in Geelong and the surrounding regional areas,” Dr Napthine said.
“The Victorian Coalition Government supports the continued development of Avalon Airport, which is an important competitive advantage for Victoria.
“The possible introduction of passenger flights direct to China from Avalon will further cement existing strong ties between Victoria and China and provide more flight options for business and leisure travel.
“The signing of this agreement presents an excellent opportunity to enhance greater cooperation and engagement between China and Victoria.”
HNA Group’s Hainan Airlines is China’s fourth largest airline, with nearly 500 aircraft covering more than 570 domestic and international routes.
