Simonds to host extra VFL games

Simmonds Stadium will host two Western Bulldogs VFL home games next season.

Western Bulldogs will have a stand-alone team, known as Footscray, in the VFL competition in 2014.

The two matches will be on Saturday 10 May and Saturday 28 June.

Simonds Stadium this year hosted the Geelong Cats, Falcons, Melbourne Storm, Melbourne Rebels, Nitro Circus and a live show for Casey Tutungi.

The first AFL final in Victoria outside of the major Melbourne stadiums was also held at Kardinia Park.

“We are really pleased to have our VFL team play three games at the first-class facilities at Simonds Stadium, two of which are our home games,” said

Western Bulldogs Chief Executive Officer, Simon Garlick said the club was pleased to hold two home games at the “first class facilities” at Simonds.

“We see the venue as a great alternative to Whitten Oval from an accessibility viewpoint, as the majority of our members and fans reside in the west of Melbourne.

“We look forward to seeing our Bulldogs faithful come out in numbers to support the team at Simonds Stadium in 2014.”

City of Greater Geelong Sport and Recreation portfolio holder Cr John Irvine said the increased use of Simonds Stadium by various sporting codes and clubs was exciting.

“Simonds Stadium is a world class facility and we are always working on attracting more local, national and international events to Geelong and Simonds Stadium,” said Cr Irvine.

“Last year Simonds Stadium hosted 43 football matches and we are building on that in 2014 with 52 fixtures. Ten of these will be played under lights, including one Friday night TAC Cup fixture.”
