Jail for mum’s assault on lover of ex-partner

By CHERIE DONNELLAN

A NORLANE mother who assaulted her ex-boyfriend’s new love has been handed a suspended jail sentence.
Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard Angela Millar, a Plume St mother of three and legal carer of an infant grandchild, hit the victim in the face at KFC Norlane at 8pm on 16 April.
Police Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Geoff Lamb said the victim reported “severe headaches” three to four weeks after the event.
Sen Const Lamb said Millar admitted to the assault when police questioned her on 13 May.
Millar told the arresting officer she “slapped [the victim] with an open hand”.
The victim “provoked” Millar, Sen Const Lamb said.
She had previous altercations with the victim in matters resolved last year, the court heard.
Defence lawyer Simon Northeast said the relationship between Millar and the victim became “acrimonious” after she fell pregnant to Millar’s boyfriend.
Mr Northeast said Millar admitted to anger management problems.
She had medical issues including immovable blood clots and was on psychotropic medications, he told the court.
Millar was a full-time carer of her three intellectually-disabled children and the infant grandchild.
The accused also faced theft charges for breaking into two construction sites on Plume St and stealing doors, timber and fixings on 22 August.
She faced a further charge for possessing four and a half grams of cannabis, which police found while searching her home for the stolen building materials on 17 September.
Millar told police she wanted to use the timber to “build a pergola”, Sen Const Lamb said.
The cannabis was to “help eliminate [her] depression”.
Magistrate Ann McGarvie sentenced Millar a one-month suspended jail sentence for the assault.
Ms McGarvie also ordered Millar to a 12-month community corrections order with conditions stipulating she must attend drug rehabilitation, have mental health supervision and receive anger management help for the assault.
Millar was given a two-month suspended jail sentence for the thefts, cumulative to the one-month sentence, and fined $300 for the cannabis possession.
