Upcycling means business for local artists

TO most of us, recycling means heaving bottles and cans into a big yellow-topped bin – but to three creative Geelong women, it means sales success.
The trio reveal the secrets to their success in the latest edition of Geelong Coast magazine (GC).
North Geelong artist Jessie Saligari can barely keep up with demand for her spoon necklaces in her online Etsy store, Jessie’s Junkyard.
The criminology PhD student now keeps busy in her spare time heating and bending old spoons into pendants for her popular necklaces, painting small scenes of trees, animals, silhouettes and landscapes on them and sealing them with resin.
Jessie is part of the upcycling and recycling trend, with North Geelong mum Alicia Ryan and Newtown artisan Monica Walters both starting businesses from home.
The trio are featured among GC’s 92 glossy pages filled with local stories and images by the region’s best writers and photographers.
GC is available now at all good local newsagents.
