Tasmania is right on Geelong’s doorstep

If you’ve been dreaming of a road-trip adventure through Tasmania’s wild landscapes, now is the perfect time to make it happen, especially when one of the world’s top holiday destinations is virtually on your doorstep.

Recently named Travel + Leisure’s Best Place to Visit in 2025, Tasmania has never been more accessible for locals thanks to Spirit of Tasmania’s seamless gateway right here in Geelong.

Since 23 October 2022, Spirit of Tasmania has operated from its purpose-built terminal at Spirit of Tasmania Quay. The precinct features modern facilities, a scenic waterfront boardwalk, undercover parking, a cafe, a children’s play area and a pet exercise zone. With space for up to 600 cars in the marshalling area, the process is smooth, efficient and remarkably convenient for travellers across Geelong, the Surf Coast and the Bellarine.

Bring your own vehicle on board – whether it’s a car, 4WD, campervan or caravan – and enjoy the freedom of exploring Tasmania without airport queues, hire-car shortages or extra insurance costs.

With no luggage limits, you can pack everything you need: camping gear, mountain bikes, surfboards or fishing gear. And you’ll have plenty of room to bring back Tasmania’s world-renowned produce, whisky and cool-climate wines.

Once on board, relax and enjoy the journey. The ship features three bars, including Bar 7 offering Tasmanian wines, gins, craft beers and live music; the Terrace Lounge with open seating and TVs; and the Top Deck Lounge with deck chairs, synthetic grass and sweeping views across Bass Strait.

Dining is easy too, with the Tasmanian Market Kitchen serving marketplace-style meals and The Pantry stocking snacks, sandwiches and local treats.

Families are well catered for with two cinemas showing the latest releases, a games arcade, a kids’ play area and a quiet reading room. Travellers can choose from deluxe or private cabins, or save with recliner seating offering panoramic views. Pet owners can bring their pets, with kennels available for four-legged companions.

In 2026, Spirit of Tasmania will welcome two new vessels – Spirit IV and Spirit V – offering more cabins, more space, expanded vehicle capacity and higher lanes ideal for caravans and larger off-road setups. These next-generation ships will elevate the travel experience even further for Geelong and Victorian holidaymakers.

So why wait? One of the world’s most celebrated destinations is a simple drive down the highway. Your holiday begins the moment you board in Geelong – and with Spirit of Tasmania making Tasmania closer and easier than ever, there’s no better time to explore our island neighbour. Book now and set sail to the adventure of a lifetime.
