Mamma’s still not happy

If you ask any Italian son about their mother, most will tell you that their mum is unhappy with them about something.

As a 42-year-old unmarried comedian, this is something James Liotta knows all too well.

Mamma’s (Still) Not Happy is Liotta’s latest version of his first-ever stand-up show, Mamma’s Not Happy.

“The title came from the fact that Italian mums are always unhappy with their sons about something, for the rest of their lives,” he said.

“The show features my mum, but not my real mum. It’s my character, the Mamma (Maria Pappagallo), and she opens the show. So, I do my own support act, which many people don’t do.

“Mamma comes out, which is me, and I do a 30-minute comedy set with her and then we have a little break, and I come on as myself and do a 90-minute show.”

Liotta decided to bring the show back after it debuted last year for an encore tour with sporadic shows across the country, including at North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel on July 5.

“My show has a portion of it that deals with Italian culture and growing up in an ethnic family, and there’s a lot of ethnic backgrounds in Geelong,” he said.

“What I’m really proud of in this show is that there are portions of it that are not related to being an Italian or an ethnic boy. There’s just a lot of observational material and opinionated comedy.”
