One year of Respect 2040

A Barwon South West partnership to stop violence against women is celebrating its first anniversary of strong advocacy and significant growth.

The Respect 2040 partnership expanded to 38 current partner and supporter organisations across the region to advance gender equality during its first year.

Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West led the partnership, and chief executive Jodie Hill said the initiative aimed to create a region where women and girls were free from violence.

“It’s testament to the enduring commitment of our partners that we are not only driving change, but that the partnership has grown so significantly,” she said.

“We’re seeing organisations step up, take ownership, and actively contribute to a future where equality and respect are the standard, not the exception.

“This kind of collaboration is essential for us to succeed at making lasting change… and the growth of this partnership shows that there is both a need, and a willingness, to make change.”

Respect 2040 partner Bellarine Community Health’s chief executive Kathy Russell said the initiative recognised that violence could be prevented and was rooted in gender inequality.

“An organisational culture and leadership that values respectful behaviour is key to preventing discrimination and violence for both our clients and our workforce,” she said.

“Being a member of the Respect 2040 alliance has helped sharpen our focus on improving the workplace culture at Bellarine Community Health to prevent any form of physical or psychological violence.”

City of Greater Geelong was also a partner of the initiative and mayor Stretch Kontelj said communities thrived when everyone felt “respected and heard”.

“The City of Greater Geelong is proud to partner with Respect 2040 in our shared commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive community across the Barwon South West,” he said.

“By working together, we can make significant strides in eradicating gender-based violence, ensuring every individual in our region has the opportunity to live a safe and fulfilling life.”

Respect 2040’s approach aligned with national frameworks for primary prevention of violence against women.
