Heads hang on in finals classic

Barwon Heads won a thrilling Bellarine Football League qualifying final to earn the right to meet Torquay this Saturday.

The Seagulls hung on in the dying stages to defeat Drysdale by two points on Saturday August 20 at Portarlington. Final scores 11.6(72) to 10.10(70).

A blistering opening term with the wind netted the Heads six goals to one, but Drysdale hit back in the second to lead by eight points at half time.

Two goals to five into the breeze in the third quarter meant the Hawks trailed by just two goals going into the final term.

But in a low-scoring last quarter Drysdale could manage just one goal and five behinds while Barwon Heads scored a solitary point.

The Seagulls hung on with some manic defending and will now play Torquay for the right to progress to the grand final.

Charlie Brauer and Charlie Hurst were best for Barwon Heads while key forward Brock Close kicked four goals and was a constant aerial threat all day.

Luke Preece and Lauchlan Dalgleish were best for Drysdale and Jack Hargreaves booted three majors.

Drysdale now goes into a knockout first-semi final against Anglesea on Sunday at Portarlington.

Anglesea was impressive in its 32-point win against Modewarre.

Modda led by two points at the long break, but a seven-goal third term saw the Roos home 13.18(96) to 9.10(64).

Modda lost two players to injury including captain Jeremy Ollis, but Anglesea was too good and kept the dangerous forward duo of Connor Joseph (goalless) and Tom Hornsey (two) quiet.

Jack Baker booted three goals for Anglesea and youngster Noah McGregor-Dawson was best.

Modda co-coach Chris Carlson won’t be at helm next season after stepping down from his role after the game.
