Hawks fly high to grab third

Inverleigh grabbed third spot on the Geelong & District Football League ladder and will have a double chance in finals, which get underway this weekend.

The Hawks had no trouble in disposing of a disappointing Werribee Centrals to the tune of 106 points on Saturday August 19.

It completed a bizarre season for Centrals. At one stage they were looking like the form side of the competition, but a massive capitulation over the past month highlighted their fall from grace.

It’s a different tale for Inverleigh, however, which needed to win to grab third spot.

The Hawks booted six goals to four in the opening term, but the Centurions would go on to add just one more major for the afternoon as Adam Donohue ran amok, finishing with seven goals.

James Hussey and Dalton Grundell added four each and Lachlan Buyel three with the Hawks booking a qualifying final matchup against Bell Post Hill this Saturday.

Bell Post Hill will go into the clash fresh after its second win against top side Thomson this season.

A four goal to none first term set up the 14-point win with Will Ford starring up forward with six goals to take his season’s tally to 61.

East Geelong needed things to go its way to steal third spot and while it held up its end of the bargain, it will have to settle for fourth spot and an elimination final against Bannockburn.

A 73-point win against Belmont was a nice lead up to the game this Sunday with Zac Smith and Will Hough each threading through four goals.

Smith has booted 69 goals this season and looms as a major threat in the finals.

Bannockburn didn’t have things all its own way against Geelong West with a final winning margin of nine points.

A five goal to one third term was the difference as Callum Hetherington, Alex Beardsell and Bailey Alford (three goals) spearheaded the victory.

North Geelong saved its best for the final game of the season with a 30-point win against Corio.

The Magpies’ first win of the season also dragged them from the bottom of the ladder as Jacsen Jewell continued his stellar form.

North Geelong’s win confined Anakie to the wooden spoon after a 53-point loss to Winchelsea.

Leigh Ellis booted eight goals for Winch in a superb performance.
