It was grand final night for Tennis Geelong’s Thursday Triples competition this week and all teams enjoyed the favourable conditions.
Section 1 saw minor premiers Moolap’s Two Phones Chol continue its good form with a 6-0 win over closest rivals Redbacks.
While Redbacks put in a great effort, they could only manage eight games for the night while Shaun Grigg, Lachie Edgar and Callum Davey took their second premiership in as many seasons.
Section 2 was a much closer affair when All Saints hosted The Wink Wizards.
The home team started well with Riley Warren and James Dat coming through in a close 6-4 while Elaine Ly took her singles 6-2. The third and fourth set saw the Wizards reverse their fortune with Rohan White winning the singles 6-0 while Boon Kweh and Kien Wong battling through in the doubles 6-4.
With only two games between them going into the final two sets, the match was poised for whomever could hold their nerve. Warren steeled himself in the singles winning his match 6-2, while in the doubles things were closer but the Wizards Wong and White got the job done 6-4, leaving the teams in a draw.
Section 3 was also close, with the teams tied at three all, but Grovedale’s Four Posts registered the win with a four-game advantage. Jonno Peck and Ambrose Kelly started the match well for the Posts taking the doubles 6-3, while the Goanna’s Zeke Malibiran took the first singles 6-2.
Peck then teamed with former juniors teammate Lachie Kelly to win the second doubles 6-3, while Hero Sekine levelled the sets again with his 6-4 singles win for the Goannas.
With two sets to play the match was tied on sets and games and again it would come down to who could hold their nerve. Father and son combination Ambrose and Lachie Kelly battled hard in the doubles but Sekine and Malibiran proved too strong winning 6-4, but the difference came with Peck taking his singles 6-0 giving the Posts the win and the towel.
It was Highton vs Highton in the Section 4 final when the Out of Towners faced off with the Flyers.
While the final score looked lopped sided with a 5-1 win to the Out of Towners, the set scores showed a different story.
Allan Nicdao and Dean Henneman had the easiest result of the night winning the first doubles 6-1, but Brandt Mitchell had a tough battle in his singles winning through in a tie-break.
Nicdao and Mitchell then teamed up for the doubles to take a hard fought 6-4, while Erin Wilkinson took the second singles for the Flyers in a lengthy tie-break. The Out of Towners rounded out the win with Henneman and Mitchell winning the third doubles 6-4 and Nicdao his singles 6-3.
