Kookas cause massive upset

Anglesea’s golden winning streak ended on Saturday when Inverleigh handed the club its first defeat since the 2018/19 BPCA grand final.

Chasing 163 for victory, Inverleigh caused the upset of the season and breathed new life into its season.

Since the 2018/19 grand final, Anglesea has played in 55 games before this round, winning 47 and drawing eight.

Top order contributions from Lachlan Platt (25) and Rhys Brown (43) gave the Kookaburras a solid platform with a 64-run opening stand.

Kobe George dug in at one end, but couldn’t find a willing partner from the rest of the team with no other batter reaching double figures.

At 8/153, the game was in the balance but 16-year-old George held firm with a superb unbeaten 54 from 119 balls to guide Inverleigh home with two wickets and five overs to spare.

Pace duo Dylan Taylor and Darcy Elliott picked up three and two wickets respectively for the Seas while leggie Joey Lynch grabbed two.

Queenscliff went for an audacious outright win against Jan Juc.

Chasing 276 for victory, Jan Juc slumped to an embarrassing 41 all out with Lachie and Tom Kidd grabbing three wickets each.

At 4/41, the Sharks were in trouble again in their second innings, but Nick Hayden (17 not out from 93) and Brad Roberts (58 not out from 82) made sure there would be no outright for the Coutas.

Barrabool emerged as a genuine premiership chance with a clinical 47-run against Ocean Grove.

Chasing 266, the Grubbers were well served by the in-form Shaun Fankhauser (57 from 126 deliveries) and a late-order cameo from skipper Dan Roddis (33 from 27), but a final total of 218 wasn’t quite enough as Ed Morrison grabbed 6/97 from 28 overs for Barrabool.

Armstrong Creek kept in touch with the top four with a five-wicket win against St Leonards.

The Titans successfully chased down the 140 required for victory thanks to Clay Mulgrew’s unbeaten 60.

In A2 Grade, Drysdale made easy work of its quest for maximum points against Newcomb.

Resuming at one run ahead with three second innings wickets in hand, Newcomb fell quickly as expected to leave the Hawks with just five runs to win outright, a feat they accomplished inside three overs.

Wallington defeated Winchelsea by 84 runs with Dane Wise-Graham snaring 4/43 from 19 overs while Matt Partridge tried hard for Winch with 52.

Young leggie Harry Hyland took four wickets as Barwon Heads cruised to a 195-run win against Collendina.

Fellow spinner Sam Schaller took three wickets as the Heads stayed on top of the ladder from Drysdale by percentage.
