Meg set to head north

Newtown & Chilwell’s Meg Lappin became Brisbane’s first father-daughter selection in the AFLW draft on Monday night.

The tall defender’s name was read out late in the draft at pick 59 and was only nominated by the Lions on Monday as a potential father-daughter pick.

The 179cm Geelong Falcon’s father Nigel played 279 AFL games and played in three premierships at Brisbane.

“It’s really exciting to welcome our first father-daughter to the club tonight,” Lions AFLW list manager Michael Swann said.

“When Meg is around the ball, she displays great instincts for fighting through traffic and making good decisions, we think that she is going to develop really quickly as part of our system here at the Lions.”

Geelong selected 175cm defender Evie Cowcher at pick 11.

The two-time Under 18 All Australian missed a lot of the 2025 season with back stress fracture, but the Western Australian is not afraid to leave her opponent and create damage with her long kicking.

With their second pick, the Cats picked Tasmanian speedster Priya Bowering.

Bowering averaged 20 disposals per game at Under 18 level this season and was chosen at pick 27.

Geelong selected WA midfielder Renee Morgan with pick 43.

Geelong Falcons duo Stella Huxtable and Georgia Tyrell went undrafted despite being invited to the draft combine and being among the top rated players in this year’s draft.
