Win No 2 for Geelong

Geelong made it two from two in Melbourne Country Week cricket on Tuesday February 14, defeating the strong Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association at Schramms Reserve, Doncaster.

Morning Peninsula won the toss and asked Geelong to bat first and met with immediate success.

Geelong lost two wickets with only seven runs on the board and was then 4/38, but a 111-run stand between Philip Visser (56 from 88 deliveries) and captain Sean O’Neill (50 from 82) rescued the Geelong innings.

Star East Belmont keeper Lachlan Inglis made a quickfire 31 from 21 and Geelong was able to scramble to 212 all out with two balls remaining in its 50 over allotment.

North Geelong paceman Dale Kerr struck early for Geelong when it returned to the field and kept the run rate down.

Mornington Peninsula opener Aiden McKenna (64 from 61) played an important innings and Harley Peace-Stirling looked assured at the crease.

While Peace-Stirling was there, Mornington Peninsula looked every chance of snatching victory, but when he was dismissed by Alistair McCann for 54, the end came quickly and it was bowled out for 175 from 43 overs.

Kerr was superb and took 2/17 from eight overs while East Belmont’s Dylan McMahon took 4/36.

Geelong meets Ferntree Gully & District today at Gordon Barnard Reserve, Balwyn North.
