Redfin keeps local fishos hooked

It’s been pretty tough for the local fishos this past week with very average weather and difficulty travelling to wet a line.

However, there has been some great fishing close to home.

The Barwon River has been offering some nice fishing over the past week with anglers finding redfin spread right through the system, with Queens Park being a standout location.

Casting small hard bodies and soft plastics has been very effective, however soaking worms should get you among the action too.

You’re also with every chance of finding a carp too.

The Geelong waterfront is still providing anglers lots of action with a wide variety of species finding their way onto angler’s hooks.

Pinkie snapper, silver trevally, snotty trevalla and salmon showing up in all parts of the waterfront, and pretty much all of Corio Bay, with soft plastics once again being a great option to throw.

The Bellarine Peninsula has still got some great fishing on offer with whiting, squid and gummy sharks all in good numbers.

Whiting are biting well right along the peninsula with St Leonards and Queenscliff being the best locations.

Fishing the faster moving tides has been the ideal time to fish but if you can line that up as the sun goes down then even better.

Not all boats are finding their bag of fish but to the patient angler it’s very possible with some cracking fish among it.

Gummy sharks are biting well in the deep water off St Leonards and all through the channels.

Fishing a tide change has been the key time to fish, with fresh squid and salmon being the standout baits. Some specimens reaching about 10 kilograms.

Queenscliff is starting to have a few calamari reports roll in with some very large squid among them.

Casting larger size jigs such as a #3.5 has been idea,l however if you are chasing ‘the kraken” then a whole silver whiting on a squid jag is definitely the way to go.
