Ammos claim top spot

Geelong Amateur defeated Ocean Grove by two goals in the match of the season and has one hand on the minor premiership.

Ammos are in top spot on the ladder by percentage and need to defeat fifth-placed Newcomb to stay in top spot and earn a rest come the first week of the finals.

Grove can still finish top and faces fourth-placed Torquay and would need to win by enough to gain the 2.73 percentage points to leapfrog Ammos.

The game was billed as the game of the season and it didn’t disappoint.

After an even first half, the Grubbers were eight goals up at the last change, but Ammos, who rested goaler Kim Hammond, came storming home to win 48 to 46.

Michelle Winch and Kayla Donnellon were superb in goal for Ammos and Keisha Guilmartin was her usual model of consistency at the other end of the court.

Zanna Woods was named Grove’s best while defender Amanda O’Malley and Gemma Bell had good games.

Queenscliff leapfrogged Torquay and into third spot with an impressive 52 to 43 win against Torquay.

Phoebe Knox and Tess Orvis were on target in the goal ring for the Coutas.

Queenscliff should defeat Anglesea in the final round to earn a double chance in finals.

Newcomb defeated Anglesea 66 to 52 and looks likely to play Torquay in the elimination final.

Carly Sanders took her goal tally this season to 609 with a further 48.

Ailish Glennen was named best for Barwon Heads in a 68 to 23 win against Modewarre.

Martine Rodger and Chelsea Baker were also in good form for the Seagulls.

Portarlington was too good for Drysdale, raking up a 59 to 38 victory.

Madeline Casey was best while goaler Tully Bethune shot 26 goals.
