Barwon finishes 3rd in country tournament

The 67th Inter-regional Country Championships were held in Yarrawonga on January 7 and 8.

Barwon Region sent a team of 39 players from around the region with Tennis Geelong the largest contributor of players.

The event consists of singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed across seven age brackets, as well as an Open draw.

Big improvers Loddon Campaspe took out the title with Barwon placing in third. Results across the board were good for Barwon, although they might

consider themselves a little unlucky being on the wrong side of a super tie-break in six of their first round singles matches.

Standouts were Hazel Kadera winning the trifecta in 14&U, Tano-Li making the final in all three of his 16U events and victorious in two, Nicole Mullen made her three finals winning one, while Tegan Marshall and Mikaela Mullen took out the 25U Women’s Doubles for the second year in a row.

Team coordinator Kira Aitken said she was pleased with the team results, but more importantly how well the team bonded over the three days.

“Behind every Barwon player was a Barwon person supporting them,” she said.

Division Champions were Sam Carr and Hazel Kadera (14&U Mixed), Tano-Li Quach and Matilda Sutherland (16&U Mixed), Siena Clatworthy and Hazel Kadera (14&U Girls Doubles), Tegan Marshall and Mikaela Mullen (25&U Women’s Doubles), Hazel Kadera (14&U Girls Singles), Jordyn Aitken (25&U Women’s Singles) and Tano-Li Quach (Boys 16&U Singles).
