Ladder squeeze in Section 5 Mixed

After round 3 of Section 5 Mixed tennis, all six teams had posted a win heading into last Saturday’s round 4.

In the battle of 1st v 2nd, Newcomb hosted Moriac and excellent sportsmanship by both teams resulted in a fun day, where Newcomb was eventual winner.

The first mixed sets were close with Kacie Higgins and Dion D’Souza toughing out a 7-5 win for Newcomb while teammates Alison Steele and Alan Fairchild extended the lead, winning 6-4.

Sue Maibaum and Julie Robertson got Moriac on the board with a 6-2 win in the women’s while D’Souza and Fairchild kept Newcomb ahead, winning the men’s 6-2.

Maibaum won her second set with partner Matthew Head 6-2, but D’Souza won his third set for the day with Steele and it gave Newcomb four sets to two victory.

Western Heights’ Michelle Leong and Rohan Perrott proved too good in the first, winning 6-4 against Wandana Heights, but Anne Omant and Dylan Knee-Omant countered for Western Heights, winning 6-2. Neve Omant teamed with Saskia Harendarz to take the women’s 6-2 for Western, but Perrott and Richard Jones levelled the score with a 6-4 win in the men’s.

The match came down to the final two sets where Perrott won his third for the day with Wendy Castle 6-2, closely followed by Leong and Yao Zhao winning 6-3 to give Wandana a 4-2 win. The win put Wandana four points closer to Moriac in second.

The third match of the day saw another win to the visitors with Lara getting up over Highton.

The team of Summer Lehmann, Wendy Caddy, and Charlie and Rob Dando proved too strong winning the first five sets.

The bright spot for Highton was Penelope O’Toole and Luke Trethowan taking the last set 6-1.

The win pushes Lara into fourth, and only one point behind third placed Wandana Heights.
