Hawks holds off Belmont

Inverleigh defeated Belmont by 15 points in the closest Geelong & District Football League match of the round on Saturday June 3.

A seven-goal third term resulted in Belmont leading by eight points at the last break, but a six goal to two final term saw the Hawks get up in front of a happy home crowd.

Both sides wore Indigenous jumpers for the clash in a show of solidarity.

Adam Donohue and Lachlan Buyel each booted five for Inverleigh while Sam Jones was unstoppable for the Lions with seven majors.

The win has Inverleigh in fifth place while the Lions are playing much better than their 10th place suggests.

Thomson returned home from Winchelsea with the points.

The Tigers won by 55 points to remain on top of the ladder with ruckman Andrew Jarvis best afield while Jackson Macleod booted four goals.

Winch is a game and percentage outside the top five and were well served by Michael Bourdouvalis and Jordan Gould (four goals).

Thirteen players booted goals in Bannockburn’s big win against Anakie.

Daniel Measures, Leigham Elzinga, Luke Bowdern and Ayden Osborne all kicked four majors for the Tigers as they returned home with a 192-point win.

The win pushed Banno up to fourth on the ladder and bolstered its ailing percentage.

Braydan Riddell and Nicholas Sluggett never stopped trying for Anakie.

Geelong West was too good for North Geelong to the tune of 80 points.

Blake Dye was on target for the Giants with seven goals and Scott Frangos and Rhys Ginn also played well.

Mitch Habib was North Geelong’s best with three goals. The Magpies will meet fellow winless side Anakie this weekend.

Bell Post Hill continues to knock on the door of top spot and leapfrogged East Geelong thanks to a 30-point win.

The Panthers held East Geelong to three goals for the first three quarters before the Eagles booted three more in the final term.

Boe Collins and Josh Andrews were the architects behind the win while Mitchell Helmore and Caleb Ezard (three goals) were best for BPH.

Werribee Centrals continues to resurrect its season with a 39-point win against a dogged Corio.

A seven goal to two second quarter set up the win for the sixth placed Centurions as skipper Daryl Chesterman and Bradley Carlton led the way.

Joel and Toby Bennett were Corio’s best and Billy-Jay O’Toole contributed four goals.
