Hockey players wanted

Geelong Saints Hockey club is calling on beginners to pick up a stick and join in training sessions just for new players.

Saints will be hosting free training sessions for teen and adult women to have a go and learn the basics over a four-week period starting from Wednesday March 12 at Stead Park, Corio.

Saints club president Nic Alonso said the sessions are aimed at beginners and people who might have been out of the game for a while.

“We wanted to create a welcoming space for new players to have a go as we realise it can be a bit intimidating to turn up and train with the more experienced players,” Mrs Alonso said.

“It’s a great way to have some fun, learn some new skills and meet some new people.”

The beginners sessions are supported by a Victorian government Change our Game grant, with the aim of providing pathways for more rural, regional and culturally and linguistically diverse women to play sport.

Mrs Alonso said the sessions tie in with Hockey Geelong’s Project 1200 plans to increase the number of hockey players in the area to 1200.

“We want to make it easy for people to have a go, so we have new equipment new players can borrow and snacks afterwards,” Mrs Alonso said.

“We see it as a pathway into playing the winter season, the summer season, mid-week Masters, tournaments or casual games.”

Each session, run alongside Saints training sessions Wednesday evenings, will be run by a dedicated coach and will include snacks afterwards.

Saints hockey field junior, senior women and senior men’s teams during both summer and winter seasons at Stead Park.

The sessions are March 12, 19, 26 and April 2.
