East Geelong hangs on in thriller

East Geelong scraped home in a Geelong & District Netball League round 11 thriller on Saturday July 1.

The Eagles have only tasted defeat once this season and hung on after Corio came from four goals down at three-quarter time with the final scores 35 to 34 East Geelong’s way.

Corio sits in fifth place on the ladder, half a game clear of Thomson.

Katie Seamer was East Geelong’s best while goal attack Jenelle Baker and defender Claudia Cook helped the Eagles over the line.

Corio was gallant in defeat with defender Danielle Sgarbi and centre Molly Gribble playing outstanding games.

Bannockburn kept its finals hopes alive with a 69 to 34 win against North Geelong.

Goal shooter Lucinda Bubb was in devastating form under the ring for Banno with 39 goals while star midcourter Alana Nicol and defender Rosie Shannahan were prominent.

North Geelong is 10 points shy of fifth spot and will find it tough to make finals from here, but Taleea Drever and shooter Shae Rowbottom played great games.

Bell Post Hill broke through for its first win of the season, defeating Geelong West, which is still searching for its breakthrough victory.

The Panthers won 67 to 43 after opening up an 18-goal lead at half time.

Thomson scored a precious four points by knocking off Inverleigh.

The win kept Thomson in touch with the top five, while Inverleigh is fourth on percentage.

Tigers’ goal shooter Cheyenne Philpott was on target with 32 goals and partner in crime goal attack Emma Witham shot 26.

Wing defence Riley Baker and midcourter Melissa Whyte were impressive for the Hawks.

Werribee Centrals inflicted Winchelsea’s second loss of the season with a three-goal thriller, 37 to 34.

Winch kept second spot on the ladder while the Centurions are inside the top three on percentage.

The Centurions came from five goals down at the last break to finish strongly and grab the win with Melissa Prismall and Natasha Dimkovski the architects of the comeback.
