Police gear up for NYE celebrations

Police will be given special powers to conduct random weapons searches as they promise a “swift response” to troublemakers ahead of bumper New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Thousands of officers are deploying across Victoria from Sunday, including in the Melbourne CBD and popular foreshores in St Kilda, Geelong, Lorne and the Mornington Peninsula, as they work to ensure public safety.

Melbourne’s CBD has been declared a designated area under the Control of Weapons Act from Monday, as the city prepares to welcome hundreds of thousands of revellers.

Under the declaration, police have extra powers to randomly search people within the area for weapons and remove them.

St Kilda foreshore and Geelong CBD will be designated areas for New Year’s Eve.

End-of-year celebrations usually mean an explosion of illegal fireworks, with Victoria Police warning revellers about the dangers, including death and property damage.

There were more than 60 incidents in last year’s celebrations, resulting in several serious injuries and fires.

Those caught with illegal fireworks face up to five years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.

Police said they were prepared to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of revellers.

“From the roads to railway stations, foreshores to key regional areas, there will be an around-the-clock, highly visible police presence right across the state,” Superintendent Troy Papworth said.

“As always, we urge those celebrating to enjoy themselves responsibly. Look out for your mates, have a plan to get to and from your event – if you plan on drinking, do not drive.”

“We’ve seen overwhelmingly positive behaviour at New Year’s Eve celebrations in recent years, with only a small number of people choosing to do the wrong thing.

“Rest assured, anyone heading out to cause trouble can expect a swift response from police.”

In the Melbourne CBD a midnight fireworks display will ring in the new year, showcasing lasers and projections to light up the skyline from dozens of rooftops.

Across Victoria, public transport will be free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve to 6am on New Year’s Day.
