A Belmont High School student will represent Australia in two major gymnastics competitions in Europe.

Olivia Meaney, 14, left for Europe on Sunday night (26 October) for her first national team selection.

Olivia said the thought of representing Australia was “really awesome” and that she had been in love with gymnastics ever since she started participating in the sport aged 4.

“I just really love the sport and how it challenges me because when I’m going for new skills, I have to work really hard for them,” she said.

“To wear the uniform of green and gold is really exciting on top of getting to compete against the best gymnasts at my level from different countries.

“It’s always been my dream to compete internationally, and I’m really thankful for all the support from my coaches, family and everyone who has helped me get here.”

Olivia trains with the YMCA Geelong Gymnastic Club International Development Squad, with the European tour the first step in her goal to compete at next year’s Youth Olympics.

Head coach Rhian Jamieson said Olivia’s selection was a testament to her dedication, discipline and persistence.

“She’s an incredible role model for younger athletes in our program and we couldn’t be prouder to see her wear the green and gold,” she said.

Olivia will compete in the Tournoi International in France on 1 and 2 November and in the Gympies Gymnova Cup in Belgium from 7 to 9 November.
