Bail denied

A planned one-on-one fight in a Whittington park escalated into gang brawl involving a katana (sword), box cutter and kitchen knife last Thursday, Geelong Magistrates’ Court has heard.

The two men brought four mates each to the fight and one group fled when the other drew the weapons, but one man slipped and was stabbed twice in the leg.

Magistrate Anne McGarvie denied bail to the alleged orchestrator, Shane Foster, 21, of Whittington, on Wednesday, who was on a community corrections order at the time of the fight.

Hardship support

Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Iain Martin has welcomed the Victorian Government’s announcement on Wednesday of up to $1100 in relief each for international students.

The announcement built on $25 million in hardship assistance for international students from Deakin, with the university having processed 8000 of 12,500 applications for help since April 9, Professor Martin said.

Youth Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Geelong Youth Awards, with council encouraging the community to nominate people aged 12-25 living in greater Geelong.

Award winners will receive $1000 towards their interests or education, with nominations open until June 19 for six categories: education, equality, leadership, inclusion, diversity and arts and music. More information: geelongaustralia.com.au.
