Alleged drink driver almost seven times over limit

A Barwon Heads woman has had her car impounded after allegedly blowing almost seven times over the blood alcohol limit at the weekend.

The 42-year-old woman was intercepted by police driving a black Holden Astra in Sheep Wash Road about 11:30pm on Saturday.

Police had been responding to reports of an alleged drunk driver in the area.

Police allege woman provided a reading of 0.34 on a roadside breath test – almost seven times the 0.05 blood alcohol content limit for a fully licensed driver.

Her driver’s license was immediately suspended and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1137.

She is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving.

Bellarine police sergeant Mark Thompson said police were disappointed by the alleged incident.

“We are shocked that people still think it’s okay in this day and age to get behind the wheel of a car when they have been drinking,” he said.

“This is a case of us being very lucky that there was no one injured as a result of this person being on the road at that level of intoxication.

“We are appealing to everyone on the roads, especially with the upcoming festive season, to think before getting behind the wheel if you’ve been out socialising and drinking.

“You’re far safer to pre-plan your night out and leave your car at home.

“We have had too many fatalities on our roads this year and there are already too many people who are going to be missing loved ones as we celebrate the festive season together with family and friends.

“If you’ve been out drinking and you’re unsure if you can drive, the simple answer is don’t.”
