Man charged with murder over shooting death

A 26-year-old Corio man faces a murder charge following the shooting death of Daniel Eagle, 43, as he lay in a car wreck on Saturday morning.

Mr Eagle was in the front passenger seat of a white Ford SUV that crashed with an Australia Post truck on the Princes Highway in Corio about 6am.

Investigators alleged a second vehicle following the SUV pulled over at the crash scene.

Homicide detectives alleged that shots were fired into the SUV and Mr Eagle died at the scene.

Two other men aged in their 20s were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police later arrested a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, both from Corio, and homicide detectives interviewed them on Sunday night before charging the 26-year-old with murder.

Officers remanded him in custody to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court later today.

“A 25-year-old Corio man who was assisting police has been released pending further enquires,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Detectives are reportedly investigating a firearms incident at a house connected to Mr Eagle prior to the crash.
