Students across Greater Geelong can continue to learn about bike and road safety through a community initiative aimed at saving lives on the road.
Lions Club of Corio Norlane received a $3600 Community Road Safety Grant from the state government for its Bike Ed program to maintain bikes and other equipment.
President Margaret Francese said the club was humbled to receive the grant as it was “detrimental that kids can ride from home to school safely”.
“These programs are so important for young people to learn road sense as road safety is important for everyone’s safety,” she said.
“We’ve had the bike program for a number of years, and we have a trailer with 40 brand new bikes that we take to schools along Geelong and the Surf Coast.
“We upkeep the bikes and provide them to the schools for their road safety programs for the kids to learn how to ride a bike and learn about general road rules.”
Cultura also received funding through the program to run its Road Safety for New Arrivals program that supports new Australian citizens to gain essential driving skills.
Member for Lara Ella George said the groups did incredible work in the community and that the funding would allow them to make “a real difference to road safety”.
“These important grants deliver life-saving messages right across our state, giving schools and community groups the chance to create local solutions to local road safety concerns,” she said.
