Sensory garden is coming to Serendip

An all-abilities sensory garden will soon be coming to Lara’s Serendip Sanctuary to help the environmental, cultural and recreational precinct.

The state government will invest $11 million alongside $45,000 from local businesses, including CDC Victoria, CMV Truck and Bus, and Volvo Bus Australia, to deliver upgrades and build the garden.

Minister for Environment Ingrid Stitt said the sensory garden will offer a different way for people to connect with nature and stimulate their sight, smell, sound and touch.

“I’m delighted to see businesses coming together to support our parks and reserves – helping more people get into nature,” she said.

“Our investment in the You Yangs Regional Park and at Serendip Sanctuary will strengthen the visitor experience in the region while further protecting its special landscapes.”

Serendip Sanctuary and the You Yangs are popular reserves for wildlife viewing, education and outdoor recreation outside Geelong.

Member for Lara Ella George said the sensory garden would be designed to be easily accessible for everyone.

“Serendip Sanctuary regularly hosts a range of disability services, which is why this new sensory garden is designed to ensure it’s accessible for everyone,” she said.

“It’s so important we provide opportunities for everyone to immerse themselves in nature, and projects like this remove barriers that prevent people from having that experience.

“The new sensory garden is just one of the many exciting upgrades we will see at Serendip Sanctuary in the coming years.”

The sensory garden was a project identified in the You Yangs Precinct Masterplan, and the final design is due to be completed later this year.
