Maxi cab rolls in two-car CBD crash

A maxi cab has rolled in a two-car crash at the busy intersection of Ryrie and Gheringhap streets, bringing traffic to a virtual standstill.

The maxi cab rolled after a crash with a silver Toyota Camry about 1.45pm on Friday, according to Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Peter Radford.

“Fortunately no one was in the back of the maxi cab,” he said.

Sgt Radford said police were still investigating the cause of the crash and had yet to determine who was at fault.

“We don’t know exactly what’s happened. It’s pretty clear someone has run a red light.”

Paramedics took the 39-year-old male cab driver and four other patients to University Hospital Geelong.

“They’ve all been taken up to hospital for some observations,” Sgt Radford said.

The crash caused damage to the side of the taxi and crumpled the bonnet and engine of the Camry.

Sgt Radford said it was “fortunate” the crash had occurred at a relatively low speed.

Highway Patrol officers diverted traffic as tow truck crews cleared the two cars and debris resulting from the crash.

Police reopened the busy intersection about 2.30pm that afternoon.

“It’s on one of the main intersections in Geelong and everyone just wants to get home,” Sgt Radford said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash can phone Geelong Highway Patrol at Waurn Ponds Police Station on 5247 3500.
