Highton apartment building rejected

A three-storey apartment building in Highton will not go forward following objections from the Geelong community.

City of Greater Geelong Council refused a planning permit application for the proposed Barrabool Road development after receiving 31 objections and one letter of support.

The development would have featured 21 dwellings, mostly one- and two-bedroom homes and one three-bedroom apartment on top of a basement carpark with a 10.47 metre proposed height.

The two lots are within an established neighbourhood earmarked as an increased housing diversity area opposite Higthon Reserve and close to Highton Village Neighbourhood Centre, public transport and a primary school.

Matters raised during the application’s public notice included neighbourhood character, building height and design, overlooking adjoining rooms and private open spaces, and car parking impacts.

Planning Committee chair and councillor Andrew Katos said he thanked the community for having its say on the application.

“The proposal failed to meet daylight to new windows, neighbourhood character, residential, energy efficiency and other objectives,” he said.

“We found that the planning application is inconsistent with neighbourhood character and wouldn’t make a positive architectural and urban design contribution to the area.”
