Cadel’s Criterium replaces Surf Coast Classic

A new cycling race is coming to Geelong tomorrow to replace the cancelled Surf Coast Classic events.

The Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will deliver Cadel’s Criterium at Eastern Gardens on Thursday 29 January, following the cancellation of the Surf Coast Classic women’s and men’s road races.

Race Director Scott Sunderland said he was glad that organisers were able to ensure that elite racing remained on the event program.

“The Geelong Criterium allows us to adapt quickly, keep racing on the road and bring the excitement directly into the city,” he said.

“Safety remains our priority, but we are also eager to deliver elite racing for fans, teams and broadcast audiences where appropriate.”

Cadel’s Criterium will be a compact two-kilometre circuit that is designed to deliver high-speed and technical racing through a 40km women’s race and a 50km men’s race.

The women’s race will begin at 1pm, followed by the men’s race at 2.30pm, with the community encouraged to come along and watch.

Surf Coast Classic’s races were cancelled on Tuesday 27 January, due to heightened bushfire risks and rapidly changing and unpredictable weather conditions.

The Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Races will continue to proceed over the weekend with no identified impacts at this time.
