Police shot a man who charged at them with a shovel in Waurn Ponds on Wednesday night, causing injuries to his lower body.

Officers attended a residential address on Willesden Drive after receiving a noise complaint just before midnight on Wednesday.

A man allegedly armed with a shovel confronted the officers, Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told 3AW radio on Thursday morning.

“He wouldn’t put it down and they felt threatened and responded by shooting him,” he said.

Police alleged the man charged at the officers, one of whom shot him in the lower body.

The 46-year-old man was taken to hospital in a stable condition, a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Armed Crime Squad detectives will investigate the incident with oversight by Professional Standards Command “as per standard protocol when a police firearm is discharged”, they said.
