Ten workers test positive at chicken plant, another 20 await result

Ten workers at a Breakwater chicken processing plant have tested positive for COVID-19, the site’s owner has confirmed.

In a statement tonight Turosi confirmed 420 employees at its Golden Farms plant underwent testing last week after a worker tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday.

Of the 420 employees, 10 tested positive and 390 negative, with another 20 still awaiting their results.

“Following testing all employees were advised to self-isolate pending test results,” Turosi chief executive officer Phil Hand said.

“There was no processing or production on the Geelong site over the weekend.

“Our testing and contact tracing at a plant level were implemented immediately last week.

“In addition, we continue to work closely with Barwon Health and the Department of Health and Human Services contact tracing teams.”

The plant also underwent cleaning and disinfecting over the weekend after it closed.

Golden Farms plant would remain closed for 14 days, Turosi confirmed.

“Our priority right now is the health and well-being of our employees and assisting them at this very difficult time to protect their families and the broader community,” Mr Hand said.

“All employees have been requested to self-isolate for two-weeks.”

The company has yet to confirm pay arrangements for employees.
