Winchelsea has a new Adventure Play Space inspired by ideas and designs from primary school children.
Winchelsea Primary School’s grade five and six students shared their concepts for the play space during a design workshop, with the space formally opening at 3.30pm on Friday, August 29.
Surf Coast Shire councillor Tony Phelps said the project received $750,000 from council and $250,000 through the state government’s Sport and Recreation Victoria to fund the play space.
“(The play space) helps create a welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the environs and some healthy activity,” he said.
“I’m sure many of our local young families might have already given the Adventure Play Space a run and found it to be a fabulous addition to our riverside area.
“Thanks to community members who were involved in guiding the design of the gathering space shelter and working on the cob wall to tie the design back to the former mud hut.
“Special thanks and congratulations to the primary school children who helped provide inspiration for the play space installation designs as they have helped create a really special place for play, fun and letting imaginations run.”
Treehouse pods, a flying fox, slope slide and rock-climbing wall were among the elements that progressed from Texta-drawn concepts to features built within the new space.
The Adventure Play Space has all-abilities access, and the flying fox provides wheelchair access and an accessible seat.
