Clean tech project get green light

Two green projects come to fruition in the region as a result of grants from the City of Greater Geelong.

The two Clean Economy Grant recipients, Boomaroo Nurseries and Deakin University, will put their clean tech plans into motion thanks to funding of $25,000 and $23,400, respectively.

Boomaroo will use the grant to enact its EcoSmart Boiler Optimisation project, which uses AI to minimise the energy consumption of its boilers by up to 30 per cent, reducing both fuel costs and emissions.

Deakin will begin an energy efficiency prototype trial in 20 Geelong houses, aiming to optimise heating and cooling device usage and returning energy savings equal to the cost of the prototype within two years.

Environment & Circular Economy portfolio deputy chair Councillor Emma Sinclair said the two projects would deploy smart technology to support better outcomes for our environment and community.

“We’re proud to back these local ambassadors for clean technology and build capability in our region, as we strengthen our region’s reputation as an advanced manufacturing leader and City of Design,” Cr Sinclair said.

“Council looks forward to seeing the end results of the projects and how they contribute to making Greater Geelong an even better place to live.”

Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj said there had been eight applications to the 2024-25 Clean Economy Grants round, requesting more than $198,000 in funding support.

“I applaud Boomaroo Nurseries and Wholesale Supplies and Deakin University for their clever and creative proposals to reduce running costs and emissions,” Mayor Kontelj said.

“It’s fantastic to see a thriving local industry that provides job opportunities right here in Geelong, without community members needing to leave the region for career advancement.”
