Traffic along the Surf Coast Highway was treated to a grand sight as the Geelong Football Club’s cheers squad brought a sea of blue and white to life with a high-decibel GO CATS victory roar.
The cheer squad, backed by local Cats fans, put on a raucous show at the giant heavy-metal ‘GO CATS’ sign erected by Villawood Properties at Mount Duneed to help drive the blue and white hoopsmen to AFL premiership glory over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Saturday.
The Catters are shaping up for an historic 11th premiership cup after winning straight sets over the Lions and Hawthorn in this year’s finals campaign. The Lions will be nervous after their 38-point qualifying final loss to the Cats but buoyed by their 29-point dismantling of Collingwood to secure their grand final appointment with Geelong.
Key player injuries in both camps have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the contest but augur for a fierce and fascinating battle.
For fans at Armstrong’s ‘GO CATS’ sign, however, the history, statistics and performances were all second to a week-long rush of finals fever adrenaline and their unswerving confidence in a positive Cats outcome at the big dance.
