Tails wag for park plans

Energetic Belmont bearded collie Myley is wagging her tail for a new fenced dog park on her regular walking route along the Barwon River.

The 10-year-old Scottish sheepdog loves socialising with other dogs and their people, according to owner Coralea Gellion.

“Most people think she’s a puppy because she’s so full of beans,” the mother-of-two said.

“She’ll definitely love it – being a sheepdog, she loves the open spaces. She’s a social dog too, so being able to interact with other dogs is great.”

Myley gave a round of a paws to Geelong council, which recently finalised the park’s location at 162 Barrabool Road under James Harrison Bridge.

The $225,000 state government-funded dog park, expected to be built next year, features seating, paths and a separated space for small or timid dogs.

The park also features the ulti-mutt challenge for competitive local pooches – an obstacle course with balance beams, hurdles, weave poles, a tunnel and more.

“I’m sure we’d love to give it a go but whether she’s able to it is a different matter,” Coralea laughed.

“It’s great for those dogs that love the agility tests.”

Council received nine submissions supporting the location, along with an “overwhelming majority of informal online engagements” in favour.

One objector raised parking and site drainage concerns.

Kardinia ward councillor Ron Nelson said the site was an excellent use of the large open space under James Harrison Bridge.

“Fenced dog parks are not only great for dogs – they also offer owners a place to meet and develop friendships with other dog owners.”
