Surf Coast’s older residents will have access to free driving courses to support them across different modes of transport.
The courses will be available in Lorne, Aireys Inlet, and Torquay in February and March to help people become wiser drivers, walkers, travellers, motorised scooter users, and wheelchair users.
Lorne Ward councillor Gary Allen said creating an age-friendly community where older people are valued, respected and actively supported was important.
“The informal and friendly courses are a fantastic way for ageing drivers to stay up to date. There are no driving tests, and morning or afternoon tea is also provided,” he said.
“If the car is not an option, quality of life can be considerably reduced. We need to be confident in accessing various viable transport alternatives.
“The course material centres on the safe mobility of ageing people and supporting them in making safe travel choices as a driver, pedestrian, or when using alternative travel options.”
The Wiser Driver four-week course will start at the Lorne Community House on February 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 10am to noon.
It will also be held at the Aireys Inlet Community Centre on February 28, March 6, 13, and 20, from 1pm to 3pm, and the Torquay council offices on March 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 10am to noon or 1pm to 3pm.
The three-week Wiser Walker, Wiser Traveller course will take place at the Surf Coast Shire Council Offices in Torquay on March 12, 19, and 26, from 10am to noon.
The one-day Safer Scooter, Wiser Wheelchair course is on Monday, March 4, at the Torquay council offices from 10am to 3pm.
