Fatal crash in Belmont

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision in Belmont this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Barwon Heads Road and Breakwater Road about 12.15pm after reports a truck and cyclist had collided.

Ambulance crews worked on the male rider but he died at the scene.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or with further information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

VicRoads warned drivers the intersection of Barwon Heads Road and Breakwater Road was closed in all directions due to the collision.

Motorists are to follow the direction of emergency services and to be mindful of local traffic when detouring.

Drivers should plan ahead to find another route home for the afternoon peak. Fyans Street, Carr Street, Boundary Road, the Princes Highway and Lower Duneed Road provide good alternatives.

Those travelling between Geelong and Barwon Heads/Ocean Grove can use Bellarine Highway through Leopold and Wallington instead.

This closure is under Victoria Police control. The road will re-open when investigations are complete and it’s safe to do so.

Real-time traffic conditions are available at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au or via the VicTraffic mobile app.
