Boost for Coastline Health

South Barwon projects that look after the health of marine and coastal environments will receive a welcomed financial boost thanks to the state government.

The government will deliver close to $1.7 million in funding through Victoria’s Resilient Coast, Sea Country and the Coastal and Marine Management Plans grants programs.

Local projects receiving funding include Surf Coast Shire Council’s Painkalac Estuary Flood Risk Project to generate flood modelling for the creek.

Barwon Coast also received $90,000 for its Bancoora Coastal Adaption Plan to identify coastal hazard exposures while maintaining the area’s important cultural, environmental and community values.

Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman said the projects and grants identified opportunities to protect the future of the surrounding coastal environments.

“Victoria’s Resilient Coast grants program will help coastal communities prepare for future environmental challenges,” he said.

“Barwon Coast’s Bancoora Coastal Adaptation Plan will ensure strong decision-making for future use and development of the Bancoora and Breamlea coastal area.”

The Victoria’s Resilient Coast grants program provided $1 million to fund projects that plan for climate change impacts and builds on from the close to $800,000 awarded last year.

The Sea Country grants program funded Aboriginal and Traditional Owner organisations with $500,000 to assert their cultural values, rights and obligations in marine and coastal management.

The $200,000 Coastal and Marine Management Plans grants program will help marine and coastal Crown land managers to prepare, review and implement coastal local-scale plans.
