A funding shortfall of at least $25 million has cast doubt over a pre-election promise of a recycling plant to water gardens and sports grounds in the Geelong region.

Labor committed $10 million to build the plant at Black Rock to supply class C water to Torquay and proposed residential developments around Armstrong Creek, near Mount Duneed.

Geelong parents have been urged to protect young teens from pornography on Christmas cyber-gifts and social media over summer holidays.

With research showing kids as young as 11 exposed to explicit online pornography and teens looking to the internet for sex education, Deakin expert Debbie Ollis said parents need to be extra-vigilant over the holidays.

Lorne’s Falls Festival should scrap a program paying voluntary workers with tickets amid concerns of exploitation, according to a local unions leader.

“If workers are going to do the work, the employers have got to pay the rates,” said Geelong Trades Hall secretary Colin Vernon.

The Lara community has rallied to raise more than $22,000 to support the family of an 11-year-old boy killed in a house fire on Monday, in which a 74-year-old man also died.

Peter Cochran, 74, and Elihjohn O’Donnell, 11, died in what police described as one of the most “intense” fires in the region in recent times. Emergency services were called to the Forrest Road North blaze about 4.50am on Monday.
